Bright Hub Residual Earnings July 2011

July was the first month where Brighthub issued two payments instead of one monthly payment. Of course, what I mean by that is that they would have issued two payments if I had made the pay out. My total monthly earnings in July on page views was $4.61.

I don't mind the $4 bucks, its the thought of having to update these articles in a few months that bothers me a bit. I'm glad that I don't have a ton of work at BH, because the thought of having to keep content fresh for something like .10 a month is not appealing at all. I can understand why people would let their under-performing articles go stale.

Well, I guess I will cross (or burn) that bridge when I get to it.

Demand Studios Revenue Share Earnings July 2011

My earnings in July were down. I only earned $9.24 on my 33 articles, which means that I didn't even hit the $10.00 pay out. One of my steady earners didn't earn anything in July, which accounts for some of the decrease. The article in question already has earned about $2.50 this month, so I should have a more regular month in August.

$9.24 for old work. It makes me wish that I would have written hundreds of those articles, since the money from the hundreds I wrote for Demand upfront is already long gone. Ah, well.

Bright Hub Residual Earnings June 2011

Nothing spectacular to report, but at least my earnings at BH are consistent.

I earned 4.11 on my old stuff, with an extra .12 thrown in for an article in holding. The article in holding eventually got thrown out by BH. In an act of good faith, they returned my copyright back on the piece, and I threw it up on my boardgame rules website, Howdoyouplayit.com. It's more than I could ask for, really. They paid me upfront for the work, and now it can still earn a little on my own site.

This month, I adopted a few articles at BH. I'm not exactly thrilled with the adoption process. A few of the articles I adopted have yet to be accepted by the editors after about 2 weeks, and I won't earn residuals until my changes on the work are accepted by the editor. Additionally I picked some real duds--stuff that gets like 10 pv a month, which is why they were abandoned in the first place, I imagine.

But it's not all bad news. I did pick up a really solid article that should get 50-100 pv a month for the next few years. Its an article on Unlocking Super Smash Bros. Brawl Characters, so it should be relevant for quite a while. Still, I put about an hour of work into it, so I'm looking at something like 5$ an hour. OUCH! -- but at least it was a labor of love.

June 2011 Demand Studios Revenue Share Earnings

My revenue share earnings for June were good at DMS. I had a single article (something that is pretty fluffy, and thin content wise) account for about 40% of my earnings. Why did it do so good? It was a "How To Buy ..." article, and I think that it had good corresponding ads on the page when viewers actually visited the article.

The numbers for June: $16.76, up by over $3.00 from last month, and my second highest earnings for Rev. Share at DMS for the year. My article count is about 33 articles, with only about 20 actually earning money every month.

Not bad, but it still doesn't even pay my lowest monthly bill.

Bright Hub Residual Earnings May 2011

I had a slow month at Brighthub. My Residuals are basically in the same place as last month, but I didn't do any new work for them, so I was under the normal $10.00 payout. Surprisingly, though, even though I was under, I did meet a request to change an article within a time frame that made me eligible for a $1.00 bonus. It was a special promotion to encourage writers to finish rewrites on the stuff that was hit in Panda. I think it was that $1.00 that made me make pay out, even though I was under the threshold.

My total Rev. Share for BH in May was $3.67. With the $1.00 bonus, my monthly total was $4.67, which is about the cost of a good hamburger. The good thing is, I like burgers.

Demand Studios Revenue Share Earnings May 2011

I had another consistent month over at Demand Media for my revenue share. A few of the titles that I created right before the writer created assignments (WCA program) ended are doing well. It's sort of a bitter sweet feeling. I am glad the the titles I made were "Winners" but its unfortunate that I cannot do more like them.

I broke the monthly $10.00 payout every month this year except January, and May was no exception.

My earnings for May on my revenue share were $13.34 on about 30 articles. I'm happy with it, but it sure isn't paying my rent.

Bright Hub Residual Earnings April 2011

April was not a fun month at Bright Hub. The site was hit pretty hard by Google's Panda update, and I personally watched a 50% reduction in page views in about a 24 hour period. Articles that were especially smacked by the update went into holding, where they could not be seen by the public.

The good news about the held articles is that BH did pay out revenue share based on the average performance of the article over the previous three months. This amounted to a whopping .08 cents in revenue for me, but it was better than nothing. The only downside to their method was that I did have one article that was only a week or two old and was on pace to hit about 200 page views, which is about .40 cents. Because it was new, it didn't have the history, and I didn't get credited for it, but it's not a big deal. I am glad that they handled it the way they did. They seem to have a high level of integrity and concern for the writer, at least in my experience.

My earnings for the last few months were as follows:
April 2011--$4.10 (revenue share) $.08 (held content) $4.18 total rev share. I also added 9 articles this month, and still earned less than March. The total article count for April was 34, but 5 were held, so 29 were receiving views .
March 2011--$4.42 with only 25 articles live.
February 2011 $3.18 with 20 articles live.
January 2011 $1.36 with 14 articles live.

I was experiencing upward growth until Panda. It kind of soured me on the idea of writing more for awhile, because they take longer and pay less in the short term than Demand Studios. Still, I think it is a good opportunity, especially if you can get some decent keywords.

Demand Studios Revenue Share Earnings April 2011

April was a better month for me at DMS. Revenue share was up to $14.76 for the month, with a total of 32 articles. My highest earner was $3.78, with my lowest article with earnings was $.06.

My revenue share articles seem to be swinging pretty wildly.
January 2011: $8.90
February 2011: $18.75
March 2011: $11.37

And that is all on the same 30 articles, with the exception of two articles added in March. I don't really know how to explain it, other than it seems that I have a few articles that earn a lot per click. If they don't do well in a month, it drags my total earnings down.

I will keep you posted next month. Since I gave my wife my copy of Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom and told her to hide it from me, I should get more writing done.
